Branchville Volunteers Extinguish Hollywood House Fire
Branchville volunteer firefighters were alerted to a house fire in the Hollywood section of College Park. On Sunday, November 12, 2023 at around 1100 a.m., Branchville and other surrounding stations responded in the 5100 block of Lackawanna Street and arrived to find a one-story single family house with smoke showing from a fire located in the kitchen. Branchville volunteer firefighters worked with crews from College Park and Berwyn Heights to locate, extinguish, ventilate and overhaul the damaged area. Upon checking for extension firefighters found and extinguished a fire in the house attic. One occupant was treated on the scene and transported to a local hospital for an injury sustained during the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
While the cause of this fire is under investigation it seems appropriate to remind everyone that cooking is the number one cause of fires across the country!!!
According to the United States Fire Administration, Cooking is, by far, the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
In 2021, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated 170,000 home cooking fires. These fires caused an estimated 135 deaths, 3,000 injuries and over $494 million in property loss.
