Multi-Alarm Apartment Fire in New Carrollton

Around 1545 hours on Monday, September 17th, Engine 111 and Chief 11 were alerted to respond on the second alarm for an apartment fire in the New Carrollton area of Co. 28’s first due in the 5800 block of 85th Ave.

First arriving units reported a 3 in the front and 4 story in the rear garden-style apartment with heavy fire showing from the top floor and through the roof. A second alarm was transmitted shortly thereafter bringing Co.11 and other units to the scene.

Upon arriving on scene, E111 officer and lineman were directed to report to the front of the original fire building. E111 driver began working with other first and second alarm engine companies to set up a water relay from 85th Ave into the complex as first alarm units began experiencing water issues from the private-hydrant water source within the complex.

E111 officer and lineman engaged in an exterior fire attack on the original fire building knocking down all visible fire for approximately one hour before being directed to redeploy their line to the top floor to knock down hot spots for around another 45 minutes before reporting to rehab. C11 was assigned as the supervisor to one of the attached exposure buildings.

A third alarm and a mayday task force were both transmitted during the incident. After clearing rehab, E111 was reassigned to make up part of the RIT with TK55 which remained as their assignment until they were released from the scene. Co.11 operated on scene for approximately six hours before returning to service.

Ambulance 119 remained in service during the incident and ran numerous calls throughout the north side of the county.
