Steady Rains Cause Multiple Crashes

Steady rains in the Washington Metropolitan area contributed to a number of motor vehicle accidents on the Capital Beltway in the vicinity of northbound I-95. The most serious accident occurred just after midnight Sunday morning when a driver lost control on the outer loop before U.S. Route 1 and struck another vehicle before slamming into the slow shoulder concrete wall. Branchville Engine 111 (E811) and Ambulance 119 (A811B) responded along with units from Companies 14 and 35. E835 and E811 provided barrier protection shutting down the three right lanes of the Beltway as the driver of the first vehicle was extricated by Rescue Squad 814 and transported to a local trauma center. The other driver was transported as well with minor injuries.

Units responded to additional minor crashes on I-95 and the Beltway before a second serious crash occurred early Sunday morning on the Inner Loop of I-495 between New Hampshire Avenue and the ramp for I-95. An SUV lost control and crashed head-on into the slow shoulder guardrail and barrier. The driver was transported to a local trauma center by A811B.
